Yokohama
The openining of the  Yokohama Port to foreign ships in 1859 began the development of Yokahama from a 600 person village to a metropolitan area, a center of cosmopolitan culture. In 1872 the Yokahama Tokyo railway line was opened (see present day Sakurakimachi Station/Yokahama and Shimbashi in Tokyo). Today Yokahama is 435 square miles, having sprawled and merged with many neighboring towns.
