What about Thessaloniki
Prehistoric settlment of Thessaloniki dates back as far as 2300 B.C. The present city was founded in 315 B.C. by the brother-in-law of Alexander the Great, King Cassender of Macedonia.  The name Thessaloniki honors  Cassender's wife and Alexander's sister, of that same name.

Today Thessaloniki is Greece's second largest city. It is an important port and the most important city of Macedonia.

Important in the history of Christianity, the two epistles to the Christians of Thessaloniki were written by Saint Paul in Roman times when he preached the new religion in Thessaloniki.

Historical Names in Thessaloniki's past
Leo the Mathematician
Leo was a philosopher, astrologer, mathematician and inventor. His talents were sought by the Arab and Byzantine establishments of his time.

John Cameniates (Priest and Historian) -
Wrote about the attack on Thessaloniki by Leo of Tripoli on July 31st July of the year 904. At the time Thessaloniki was the second most important city of the  Byzantine Empire.


Cyril and Methodius (missionaries)
These Missionary brothers invented and used the Cyrillic Alphabet to bring literacy and Christianity to the Slavs.

  • UNESCO Sites: Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessalonika (1988 )

  • Thessalonika offrs monuments from the Roman and Byzantine periods. During the Byzantine period, Thessalonika was the second most important city, Constantinople being the first.
