About the Italian Language
Tuscan Usage

History of the Italian Language
Many dialects came into being as Italian was developing. Italian documents produced in the 10th century are dialectal in language. During the next 300 years  Italian writers wrote in their native dialects.

During the 14th century the Tuscan dialect began to overtake the other dialects. This was due largely to the commercial importance of Florence.  Florentine culture produced  Dante, Petrarca, and Boccaccio.
