Health: What women's friendship can do
for you
This link is on
the Melissa Kaplan's site for Chronic NeuroImmune Diseases. It doesn't
have anything to do with disease but Melissa Kaplan did the best job of
laying out the article for you to read comfortably. It tells how
important women's friendship is to women, how it makes us healthier and
increases our ability to deal with spouse loss and old age ... and how
it is the first thing we compromise when pressures of modern life hit
us. While you are on the site, learn more about Melissa Kaplan
and her struggles to make the world fairer for people who share her
disease - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Edward
C. Prescott - Won 2004 Nobel Prize for Economics with former
fellow
Norwegian University of
Pittsburgh student,
Finn
E. Kydland
, (in 1970's and 1980's) - for
proposing that innovative technologies and shocks, like a sharp
increase in oil prices, play a much greater role in causing booms and
recessions than fluctuations in demand. They won the prize for two
papers they wrote that contradicted Keynesian theory.
Keynesian
theory is based on the premise that changes in demand, esepcially
consumer demand, are an important key to business cycles. According to
the prize awarders, The Prescott-Kydland papers "transformed academic
research in economics'' caused a deep change in the academic research
related to economics and the consequent economic policy making.
Christopher
Reeve - Christopher Reeve was famous in the cinema for his
portrayal of Superman, his
wonderful good looks, his acting and directing both before and
after a
horsebackriding fall caused him total paralysis which he never
stopped trying to overcome, not only for himself, but for others who
would suffer this terrible hardship well after him. He spoke out for
stem-cell research and other potential treatments and was 52 when
he passed away (October 11, 2004).

Take a look at Margaret Wertheims NYTIMEs Article about Dr.
David Huffman & Origami.
The
term Origami comes
from the Japanese words "ori" which means "to fold" and "gami"
which
means "paper". The art of origami has changed immensely
from a skill
that was associated solely with decoration in the Western mind.
Mathematicians and other science minded people, including Dr. David
Huffman of the University of Santa Cruz have looked into the principles
that are the basis of folding, converting skills communicated
verbally
for generations into algebraic rules. The field of computational
origami, sometimes called "technical folding" or "Origami Sekkei"
practical connects diverse fields of math studies such including
algebra, linear algebra, geometry, c, number theory, coding and
computer science. Paper folders are meeting at FIT in New York This
week for the yearly convention of Origami USA.
Article
speaks of Dr.
David Huffman, University of California, Santa Cruz - Dr Eric Demaine,
Dr. Peter Newman, Dr. Robert Lang: "Origami
Design Secrets: Mathematical Methods for an Ancient Art", Dr. Michael
Tanner, Dr. Eric Demaine.
