Ogata Korin and His Life

The Edo period spans the years 1615–1868. Korin's life (1658–1716) falls almost into the middle of this chronology.  He was a painter, decorator, and teacher. He is known for his lacquer work and screen paintings, his bold designs and use of contrasting colors, his composition and use of empty space. He was influenced by the work of earlier artists - Koetsu and Sotatsu. But Ogata Korin created his very own style.

To see a beautiful example of Ogata Korin's work, please see  Yatsuhashi.  (Yatsu means "Eight" and "Hashi" means Bridge, thus "Eight planked bridge"). This pair of screens is considered to be one of the artist's greatest works. Read an  in-depth description by the curators of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Korin painted marshland irises many times in his career. Korin's signature, on the right screen, contains granted him by In 1701 the court honored Ogata Korin with an honorary title and he included that in his signature when signing what he considered to be his major paintings. Further details of the signature on this work indicate that it must have been executed in the final years of Ogata Korin's life. Like artists and other people in other times, including our own, Korin spent the latter years of his life seeking patronage. For this reason he communted a great deal between Kyoto and Edo from 1704 to 1708. (See Korin's 1705 "Seibo").  Failing to acquire the sought patronage, Korin built a new home in Kyoto in 1711. These screens, it appears, date from this period.

See the Kyoto Museum of Art hold Korin's Bamboo and Tiger  and their commentary.

A short history of Edo Period Art can be found in the Paris Web Museum. To learn more about the these times, please look at  History of the Edo Period. One of the best collections of artifacts, documents/documentation and artwork of the Edo period can be found at the
Tokugawa Art Museum - At the core of the collection are objects inherited from the first shogun, Ieyasu. The Owari, like other great daimyo, also treasured the art from earlier generations. Thus the Museum has come to own most of the extant sections of the twelfth century Illustrated Tale of Genji.

Other famous artists of the Edo Period include Ando Hiroshige, and Katsushika Hokusai

You will notice that this poster is much more expensive than the others. I noticed this too and asked AllPosters about it. This is their reply:

Apparently, the pricier version of "Crane" by Ogata Korin is actually a canvas transfer rather then just a print on paper.  This is why this version is much more expensive.  We are working to group all of these types of prints and provide a more detailed description in the near future.
