Gambling Pittsburgh Phil was a charismatic Pittsburghian named George E. Smith. He was phamos for his aphorisms and his gambling skill. He he learend as much from watching his fellow gamblers as he did from studying the horses.He noted that "all consistently successful players of horses are men of temperate habits" and also that people at the track needed to keep their attention on the race and not on the opposite sex. He observed that commonly gamblers try to make up for losses by betting even more heavily. He suggested that gamblers should do the opposite, noting that when people are losing they are also often losing their calm reasoning ability. No wrote: "Cut your bets when in a losing streak and increase them when running in a spasm of good luck." Following his own advise, he died in 1905 leving an estate of almost $2 million, an enormous amount of money at that time. John bet a million Gates(1855-1911). Years of the Daily Racing Form In the summer of 1905 the Daily Racing Form began to
publish the records of horses past performances, which became the
Rosetta Stone of horse racing, revealing fractional times, speed
figures, medications, equipment, odds, pedigree, career totals,
trainer, jockey, speed figures, positions during races, workouts. The Daily Racing form also adds cryptic
